Beavers are young people aged 6 to 8. Our Beaver Colonies across Stourbridge are friendly, welcoming places where children can try new things in a safe and supportive environment.

Beavers play games, make things, explore the outdoors and learn how to work together. It’s a great way to build confidence, independence and the skills they’ll use right through life.

What do Beavers do?

Being a Beaver is about having adventures close to home and learning through play. A typical Beaver programme might include:

  • Team games and challenges
  • Short walks and simple hikes
  • Sleepovers and their first nights away from home
  • Nature and environmental activities
  • Craft, cooking and creative projects
  • Visits from local services (for example, fire, police or community groups)
  • Activities that help them understand how to be kind and helpful to others

Leaders plan a balanced programme so every Beaver has the chance to try something new, work towards badges and feel proud of what they achieve.

Badges and awards

Beavers can earn lots of badges for joining in, trying new skills and helping others. These cover things like:

  • Adventure and outdoor skills
  • Personal skills such as safety, communication and teamwork
  • Creative activities, science and technology
  • World and community activities

By taking part regularly in the programme and nights away, Beavers can work towards their Chief Scout’s Bronze Award, the highest award a Beaver can earn.

Adults and volunteering

Beavers only happen because of our amazing volunteers, either working directly with young people or something more ‘behind the scenes’. You don’t need to be an expert in camping or outdoor activities, just willing to get involved.

Volunteering with Beavers can be flexible around work and family life. Whether you’d like to help out week-after-week or whenever-you-can, training and support are provided, and many roles can be shared between several people.

Volunteering with Beavers is a great way to:

  • Make friends, meet people and have fun
  • Try new things and challenge yourself
  • Learn new skills and gain experience
  • Positively impact your community
  • Create vital opportunities for young people
  • Make memories that’ll last a lifetime

If you’re interested in helping we’d love to hear from you by completing our volunteer form.

FAQs

Beavers usually wear a turquoise sweatshirt, often with a group scarf (necker) once they’re invested. Leaders will let you know what’s needed and where to get it locally or online.

Each Group sets its own subscription (subs) to cover running costs. There may be extra charges for some events or camps. If cost is ever a problem, please talk to us confidentially – we don’t want money to be a barrier to joining.

Regular attendance helps Beavers settle in, make friends and work towards their badges. We know family life is busy, so just let the leaders know if you’ll be away.

All adult volunteers follow Scouts’ national policies on safety and safeguarding and complete appropriate checks and training. Young people’s welfare is always our top priority. Follow the link to read our Safeguarding Code of Conduct.
